The 2022 Guide to Skåne’s Hotspots

TypeO 2022 Skåne Hotspot Guide

Another season and more of our favourites...

After a number of years as Skåne residents, we have come to enjoy what the region has to offer when it comes to places to visit and – not to mention our preferred pastime – eat at. So much creativity and industrious talent is hard at work to infuse this southern region with year-round capabilities in feeding visitors and locals with both food and drinks as well as destinations to enjoy, regardless of the season or weather. Welcome to Skåne in 2022. Here’s a list of our favourites.

Ps. Are you missing any of your own 2021 favourites in Skåne? Drop us a line at hello@typeo.se and let us know!

01
Bise
Malmö

Malmö was once the home to the highest number of restaurants and bars per capita in all of Sweden. Whether or not that record still stands, we don’t know. However with restaurant Bise, local restauranteurs Arvid Falk and Ludvig Fredriksson has opened restaurant and bar, not adhering to a specific cuisine or concept.

With this latest addition to the Malmö restaurant scene, good food, inspired by great tastes from all over the world is to be enjoyed in a relaxed, fun and easy going atmosphere.

02
Beekind Ice Cream
Hörte

Hörte Brygga, right on the south coast of Skåne, has been our personal favourite for many years. As part of its iteration, owners Martin Sjöstand and wife Emma have opened Beekind Ice cream just behind the restaurant in the form of a stationary ice cream truck.

The ice cream is made by local ingredients and flavoured in the same fashion. Toppings are made in house and so are the cones that are made with flour from ”heirloom” grains.

03
Freja
Malmö

When Agnes Hansson found the perfect space in a perfect location, she did not hesitate to realize one of her dreams. This resulted in a combo of a wine bar, lunch and dinner eatery as well as a pastry shop.

Located at Davidshallstorg, one of the most sought after addresses in Malmö, the tiny locale is as quaint as its surroundings. Drop in for a coffee, or a glass of wine or a quick meal before or after browsing the many quirky shops in the area.

04
Östangård
Borrby

Italian food, healthy food, coffee shop and retail therapy. Östangård is an all in one beautiful solution to brighten any dreary day. Start in the vintage clothing shop, continue through the café and finish at the restaurant.

The in between time can easily be spent expressing oohs and aaaahs while gazing at the view. And you can even spend the night!

05
Lillaro Café
Förslöv

Clear across Skåne from us TypeO Loft lies Lillaro Café. As the name implies, light meals, coffee and baked goods can be had here. The drive to Lillaro in Förslöv is time well spent. Once there, all challenges of everyday life dissipate.

Have a seat in one of the many ”rooms” in the cute, quaint and quirky garden or keep warm inside by the cast iron stove. If you are lucky there’s home made bread for sale and if you are even luckier, the wood fired pizza oven is on as well. Open on Sundays only.

Where to Eat What in Österlen – 2022 Edition

Österlen has been a favourite vacation destination since the gentry decided it needed some R&R back in the 1800s. The rest of us mere mortals soon followed. The Österlen region in which we are fortunate to live has since become home to quite a few good restaurants and other eateries. Many of the local restaurants are open year-round and some only during the busy summer season. The common denominator is local access to a plentiful supply of local produce, meat and fish.

In this list, we have compiled a shortlist of our favourite restaurants or destinations for eating and drinking. We will try and keep it updated as time passes and new culinary discoveries are made.

01
JH Matbar
Ystad

It is about time that Ystad, one of Sweden’s summer epicentres, gets a spot where you can just drop by for a glass of magnificent wine and a plate of finger-licking good food. JH Matbar offers just that, and much more.

Run by young husband-and-wife team Christoffer and Malin Jedenstam Herbst, the casual venue takes bookings but also takes a number of walk-ins each night. The slightly austere setting serves as a minimal backdrop for the seasonal food, where flavours pack a punch and are anything but spartan.

02
Pastafabriken
Ingelstorp

Literally translating to ‘the pasta factory’, this small restaurant’s menu centres around pasta dishes with added locally produced ingredients. You’ll find the place off the main thoroughfare in the village of Ingelstorp, about a 20-minute drive from TypeO Loft. Although portions are on the small side at Pastafabriken in Ingelstorp, they are delicious and so is the house sourdough bread accompanying each dish. The Penne with Nduja and fresh herbs is a must if you’re into something with a little heat.

The restaurant gets busy in the summer and regulars congregate along with holiday-makers and the ambience is lively in this garage cum dance hall cum restaurant. The spacious patio faces due south and overlooks the in-house vegetable and herb garden.

03
Talldungens Gårdshotell

With its location in the midst of picturesque rolling hills and a stone’s throw from the beach in the small town of Brösarp, Talldungens Gårdshotell serves up honest and straightforward food made from locally sourced ingredients.

We love the friendly atmosphere, attentive and personal crew, the extensive wine list, which incidentally consists of mainly natural wines, and of course, the food which is cooked heavily influenced by Mediterranean cuisine. The quirky interior adds to the feeling of being in an eccentric relative’s spacious summer home, and if you can bring your imagination past the often cool breeze, (blankets are at hand) there is a certain Mediterranean flair to be felt if dining al fresco in the walled courtyard.

04
Köpmangatan 6
Borrby

Things are brewing in Borrby, a small Österlen village that previously has been overlooked as a place to visit. Linn Hunter and Tobias Dagerås have transformed a baby blue villa on Borrby’s main street into an inn, bistro and wine café with Mediterranean vibes.

The very reasonably priced menu has an extensive selection of snacks – Nocellara olives, Serrano and Iberico hams and cheeses – to accompany the aperitif. Starters include Yurrita sardines and boquerones and for the main course, Köpmangatan 6 serves up bistro staples such as steak tartar and Boeuf Bourguignon. Go full-on retro by ending the meal with an iconic Glace au four.

05
Strandkompaniet
Löderups Strandbad

Well aware of not mocking the hipsters, we appreciate the smoked sausages and big burgers prepared from meat and produce sourced ”within cycling distance”, by the bearded and sleeve tattooed owners of this beach shack, located at Löderups Strandbad.

We try to time our visits for late dinner when the crowds are gone and we can enjoy one, two or many of the dishes and one, two or many of Strandkompaniet’s own beer Löderups Lager. If live music is not your thing, check their website or call, as someone is playing several (but not all) days a week during high season.

06
Le Petit Bistrot
Ystad

Restaurateur and chef Crister Svantesson, a doyen in the restaurant industry, was involved in introducing the new French cuisine in Sweden back in the day. He now runs Le Petit Bistrot in Ystad together with his daughter Jennie and son-in-law Jonas.

With only 20 covers, Le Petit Bistrot is the kind of place to drop by for a spontaneous and impeccable cooked meal. Svantesson’s menu is ever-changing and he cooks whatever he feels like for the day. Staples on the short but sweet menu are fresh oysters, veal tartare, minute steak, duck confit and Tarte Tatin.

07
Villa Strandvägen
Ystad

Österlen is the home of many excellent restaurants where the meals are hearty and the ambience is relaxed – much like the pace of life here. Villa Strandvägen is one of the few places that will provide a full fine dining experience, when, or if we feel like having more of an occasion or want to impress the in-laws.

Villa Strandvägen restaurant is located literally a stone’s throw from the white sandy beaches of Ystad, in a Belle Epoque mansion. It is consistently highly ranked as a restaurant and as a small boutique hotel.

The Best Spas in Skåne

Slow down at the top 5 Scanian wellness retreats

Every year, visitors flock to Skåne to get a piece of that slight bohemian, ‘slow living’ way of life that the region is known for. Here, the slower pace lets you explore the beautiful scenery, picturesque villages, culinary highlights and cultural sights at your own pace.

What better way to get into that tranquil state of mind than to visit one of the region’s spas? We have listed 5 of Skåne’s most stunning wellness retreats.

01
Andrum Spa
Höör

Skåne’s most beautiful spa is quite unexpectedly found in Höör, a town that seldom makes the cut when recommending places to visit around Skåne. Run by the former state church of Sweden and designed by Lund-based architect Johan Sundberg, Andrum Spa reminds us of Peter Zumthor’s breathtaking Therme Vals.

The healing properties of water play a central role in Andrum Spa’s facilities, inspired by Nordic wellness rituals such as Finish sauna bathing and bathing in hot springs in Iceland. Try the 50 minute hot stone massage for the ultimate picker-upper.

02
Ystad Saltsjöbad
Ystad

In 1896, pharmacist and local politician Salomon Smith put in a motion to build a hotel along the sandy beaches on the outskirts of Ystad. Aside from the possibility to enjoy a dip in the Baltic Sea, the hotel would also come to offer indoor and outdoor pools in varying temperatures.

Today, Ystad Saltsjöbad has grown into one of Sweden’s most popular wellness destinations. The property boasts 139 rooms and suites, a spa area named Lido, several treatment facilities, a lounge area, the Nero bar and restaurants Port and Gildas.

03
Torekov Hotell
Torekov

The pier, the fishing huts in the harbour and the maritime museum all testify of Torekov’s past as a fishing village. A couple of kilometres south of the harbour is Torekov Hotell, a hotel and spa that reflects the intimate and casual ambience of the town.

In 2020, Torekov Hotell underwent a major revamp. The revamp resulted in an extended spa area which now offers a wide variety of pools – two Japanese outdoor pools, a massage pool, a large outdoor heated pool and an ice bath, to name but a few. One of the hotel’s signature treatments is the magnesium wrap anti-stress full body treatment.

04
Hotel Skansen
Båstad

Båstad, known as the tennis capital of Sweden as it hosts the yearly tennis tournament Swedish Open, draws lovers of the good life. The town is also known for its cold bathhouse that has attracted health-conscious visitors since the 1800s.

When the former bathhouse was destroyed by storms, a new one was built in its place in 2009, and now belongs to the Skansen spa hotel. Here, old meets new – we adore how the stilted timber bathhouse on the sea is juxtaposed by the hotel’s sleek infinity pool. Make sure to try Sand, the hotel’s popular restaurant, to enjoy a luxurious seafood platter.

05
The Lodge
Genarp

High above the dense woodlands and rocky heights of Skåne’s Romeleåsen, The Lodge looks out over the landscape below. This New England-style property, complete with the weathered wood finishes, handwritten beach signs and cast iron stoves, is described as a Swedish take on an American getaway.

The 1,000 square metre Honulele spa has several treatment rooms, a spot for yoga and a 12 metre-long infinity pool. A 4-course dinner is enjoyed at on-site restaurant Heaven – we recommend booking your table a few weeks in advance.

Österlen’s and Skåne’s Top Art Destinations

9 essential Scanian spots for art lovers

Skåne is – and has long been – a place of great art and art experiences. A case in point is the annual Konstrundan art event, when 500 professional artists, artisans and designers open the doors to their ateliers and workspaces for the public, making it the world’s largest art show.

But there is more. Several world-class art galleries and art museums are scattered around the region. Some are urban, others remotely located. Some display art in austere white spaces, while others place the art directly in nature. Discover the very best in our list of Skåne’s best art spots.

01
Wanås Konst
Knislinge

Some 30 years ago, writer Marika Wachtmeister started collecting and exhibiting art in the park grounds and forests around Wanås Castle, her family’s 18th Century estate just north of the city of Kristianstad. Her great love for art comes from when she and the rest of her family lived in New York during the 1960s.

The art collection and the majestic natural landscape it is showcased in is equally impressive. Our favourite installations include work by Marina Abramovic, Dan Graham, Antony Gormley and Sissel Tolaas. Although many artworks are permanent, Wanås also organises temporary exhibitions – such as the much-debated spray-painted pink sheep by artist Henrik Plenge Jakobsen that graze the grounds. Make sure to also pay a visit to the restaurant and café.

02
Olseröds Konsthall
Degeberga

Olseröds Konsthall, a contemporary art gallery located in a barn in the small town of Degeberga, is the brainchild of interior stylist Anette Mörner and her husband, gallery owner Axel. Together, they have created a remote must-visit art destination that always manages to impress, surprise and delight.

Visitors are welcomed to the couple’s own home, a Scanian quadrangle farmstead, where one of the former barns has been converted into an airy and bright backdrop for some of Sweden’s most interesting contemporary artists. Since its founding in 2016, the likes of Fredrik Wretman, Maria Finn, Åsa Jungnelius, Jakob Solgren and – our personal favourites – Lena Willhammar, Mirja Ilkka and Niki Cervin have been showcased here.

03
Kivik Art Centre
Kivik

Approaching Kivik Art Centre is an oxymoronic experience. The ever-present rolling fields, picturesque apple orchards and quaint cottages are not the usual settings for experiences of art, design, architecture and sculptures. Nevertheless, Kivik Art Centre, the brainchild of Thomas Kjellgren and Sune Nordgren, both with a solid background in the arts, has found its home right in the middle of nature, rather than in a historic urban building.

The art centre is open daily throughout summer and contains a permanent exhibition by Snøhetta, photographer Tom Sandberg, architect David Chipperfield, sculpture artist Antony Gormley, Petra Gipp and architect Gert Wingårdh, to name a few. The Venturo, an organically shaped house by Matti Suuronen, is the art centre’s reception area and café. Every year new temporary exhibitions are added to the permanent ones.

04
Galleri Arnstedt
Östra Karup

Don’t let the quaint and innocent-looking facade of Galleri Arnstedt fool you. Inside the walls of this charming art gallery in Östra Karup, a village in rural northwestern Skåne, the artist on display means business with some of the Nordic region’s most interesting emerging artists. Some recent shows that we loved included work by textile artist Diana Orving, visual artist Andreas Eriksson and sculptor and painter Staffan Nihlén.

The gallery, which is housed in a former mill, consists of a dwelling house, a stable and a sculpture park. A long-standing collaboration with Malmö Art Academy results in a couple of graduate shows every year.

05
Obra
Malmö

One to keep a close eye on is Obra, a Malmö platform for contemporary art. With a mission to introduce art to both established and new audiences, Tomás Giraldo-Feener, who co-founded the project with photographer Petra Bindel, puts on exhibitions that are meant to spark conversation about the art and the participating artists.

Since leaving the previous space in Malmö’s harbour area, Obra is without a visiting address. But keep your eyes peeled for what will come – we guarantee it will be well worth the wait.

06
Landskrona Konsthall
Landskrona

As one of Sweden’s leading art museums, located in a small town mostly known for its former heavy industry, it has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in its field. It starts with the building itself. A low slung pavilion by Fritz Jaenecke of concrete and glass, it floats in the lush greenery of surrounding Citadellet city park. It backs up to a delicate and beautifully maintained Japanese garden, created in 1989 by Ulla Mohlin.

The surrounding park is home to a permanent exhibition that comprises 20 works by different artists and designers. Temporary exhibitions are launched regularly throughout the year and attract several interesting makers, artists and designers from near and far.

07
Fabriken
Bästekille

If Scandinavian and Swedish art and design is your fancy, a visit to Fabriken – Swedish for ‘the factory’ – is a must. Sculptors such as Hertha Hillfon and Barbro Bäckström, photographers Dag Hammarskjöld and Jean Hermanson, glass artists like Josh Simpson, William Bell and Nina Westman, to name but a few, have all been exhibited at Fabriken.

Fabriken is consistently graced with high marks for displaying interesting works in an unusual setting and with knowledgeable guides as icing on the cake. The former aviation parts factory provides plenty of space to highlight each work.

08
Malmö Konsthall
Malmö

A stone’s throw from Malmö train station Triangeln, Malmö Konsthall offers a contemplative refuge from the city’s hustle and bustle. The art hall was designed by architect Klas Anshelm, who was heavily inspired by the Paris ateljé of sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. Constructed using concrete, glass, wood and aluminium, the building was completed in 1974.

Throughout the years, Malmö Konsthall has showcased work by renowned artists like Louise Bourgeois, Olafur Eliasson, Ernesto Neto, Damian Ortega and Rosa Barba, to name a few. Smak, the restaurant found on the premises, serves up a delicious lunch buffet, and the lush courtyard is great for a secluded afternoon fika break.

09
Skissernas Museum
Lund

Skissernas Museum in Lund is a unique art museum that focuses on the artistic creative process. It features the world’s largest collection of sketches, models and preparatory work for Swedish and international public art. The large exhibition rooms hold modern and contemporary art – from small pencil drawings to monumental paintings and plaster sculptures.

When you are done perusing works by Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Fernand Léger or Isaac Grünewald we highly recommend the excellent in-house restaurant. Excellent food is prepared in an open kitchen and served in the decidedly Nordic and sparsely but warmly furnished dining room.

The Cosiest Cafés in Österlen and Skåne

9 Scanian spots for a tasty ‘fika’ break

Swedish ‘fika’, the art of the coffee break (usually accompanied by something sweet), has been making waves across the globe. In Skåne, the practice is deeply ingrained into our lifestyle and there is no shortage of great cafés and coffee shops around.

We’ve done the legwork – here’s our list of exceptional Scanian places to enjoy a fika break.

01
Atrium
Malmö

One of our favourite Malmö spots to grab a coffee and do some laptop work is Atrium. Judging by the number of other patrons in the airy café, we aren’t the only ones who love to spend time there and treat it like a second living room.

Opened in 2015 and run by husband and wife team Adrian Ndreca and Natalia Andersson, the space is welcoming, bright and friendly. Do as we do: Head there early, grab one of the breakfast deals with coffee, apple juice and sourdough bread open sandwiches, and just hang out for as long as you can before you get the feeling of having outstayed your welcome.

02
Söderberg & Sara
Ystad

Voted Sweden’s best café in 2018 (and currently in seventh place, making it the second-best in Skåne after Olof Viktors in Glemmingebro), the small Ystad café and bakery Söderberg & Sara keep on surprising us with their baked goods and high-spirited service. It is like one of those cosy little neighbourhood cafés just wish you had close to home. And with a 10-minute drive from TypeO, luckily that is exactly the case for us.

The Söderberg & Sara mini-emporium of hotspots (there’s a second Söderberg & Sara in Malmö, the Hedvigdal pizza and wine spot in Malmö and the popular much-loved Pastafabriken in Glemmingebro), owners Tilde Möller, Per Söderberg and Per Extor are productive trio and never seas to surprise with their new ventures. Make sure to try the kouigh amann, described by the New York Times as the fattiest pastry in all of Europe, while at Söderberg & Sara.

03
Mat- & Chokladstudion
Malmö

There are a great many things that the masters at Mat & Choklasstudion in Malmö do well. There’s a vegetarian lunch to die for and a great selection of bread. But what they truly excel at is the creation of the most delicious and imaginative pastries, desserts and baked goods. And no wonder – head pastry chef Joel Lindqvist, who runs the place, was awarded the title Dessert master in a nationwide competition in 2014.

Our approach when tackling the very difficult task of selecting just what to order here is simply to go with the flow by having the server introduce us to all the different goodies on offer, and then put together a plate with at least a handful of different options to go to town on. It’s like we’ve died (of sugar overdose) and gone to heaven (if heaven was somewhat like Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory).

04
Kaffestugan Alunbruket
Brösarp

In 1930, cook Hilda Nilsson served her first cup of coffee to guests at her home, an 18th-century traditional half-timbered farmhouse located close to the Andrarum alun schists quarry. This makes her a true pioneer in female entrepreneurship in Skåne, and the café is the oldest in all of Skåne. It is still run by Nilsson’s ancestors.

Visiting the café is truly like stepping back in time. ‘Fika’ is enjoyed either indoors or outside, surrounded by the most magnificent garden. Our favourite thing on the menu is Alunbruket’s cookie plate, which consists of a delicious assortment of treats just the way Nilsson has served it for over 90 years. Imagine that.

05
Byvägen 35
Sankt Olof

In 2012, husband and wife Matti and Iwona Holgersson returned to Skåne (and Matti’s hometown) after having worked in various gastronomic fields in Copenhagen. A derelict carpentry in the quaint village of Sankt Olof offered them a new start in life, and a spot to explore their joint love of sourdough.

Today, the family business – a chain of organic bakeries and cafés – has grown to include no less than four different locations (in Sankt Olof, in Ystad, in Borrby and in Simrishamn). We still love the original location the best and like to drop by year-round. Don’t miss the weekly highlight – Sundays are pizza days at Byvägen 35.

06
Broder Jakobs
Lund

University city Lund has plenty of spots to get together for good coffee. But the one place we find ourselves returning to time and time again is Broder Jakobs, located in the heart of town and a couple of minutes walk from the train station.

This homey family-run bakeshop and café is always crowded so just find yourself a free spot on a sofa and squeeze in. The main reason for coming here are the mouthwatering pastries – make sure to try the cinnamon or cardamom rolls, or the vegan wheat bun filled with chunky apple compote.

07
Loshult Handelsbod
Loshult

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again … The gluten-heavy treats at Loshult Handelsbod are truly worth driving across half of Skåne for. We’ve spent years putting in the hard work of locating Sweden’s best cinnamon rolls, and we’ve finally found them in this remotely located village in northern Skåne.

The bakery, which is housed in a gorgeous ancient wooden villa, in the process of being restored by owners Salli and Raphael Bartke, also serves up the most beautiful variety of loaves of bread. Head here early (or order ahead) as queues start forming quickly.

08
Brödkultur 2.0
Helsingborg

We ran into the gem of a café while visiting Sofiero, a palace that used to be one of the Swedish royal family’s country mansions, located five kilometres north of Helsingborg. Brödkultur is housed in the palace’s former stable, which has been converted into a bakery and a café.

Brödkultur 2.0’s strong suit is artisanal breadmaking, a practice that was all but lost during the introduction of industrial breadmaking in the early 1900s. Here, the loaves are made of Krav-labelled flour and without additives. There are also proofing baskets and bags of flour for sale if you’re into baking your own bread.

09
Flickorna Lundgren
Skäret

The Lundgren sisters, which the timber-framed café and restaurant were named after, were a total of six. Greta, Anna, Ebba, Rut, Britt-Marie and Ella’s parents acquired the old fisher’s cot in 1927 and began renovating it to turn it into a holiday home for the family. When the family fell upon financial hardship, oldest sister Greta came up with the idea of turning into a café. Soon, all six sisters were involved in the budding business.

A classic from Flickorna Lundgren is Vaniljhärta, a pastry made of shortcrust dough formed into hearts and filled with vanilla cream. It is said that Swedish king Gustaf VI Adolf, who frequently stopped by for a coffee while in Skåne, would bring a selection of plants and shoots in exchange for a box of vanilla hearts.

Skåne’s Top Cycling Routes (With a ‘Fika’ Stop)

Pedalling Your Way Through Skåne

Looking for a quiet bed & breakfast getaway in Skåne? Like to spend your time off riding your bike? Whether you prefer gently rolling along the quiet roads on your e-bike or assuming the most aero position on your precious carbon road bike, the roads around TypeO Loft are perfect for road cyclists.

Unlike other parts of Skåne, traffic is light and not very hectic and motorists are more often than not courteous. Being cyclists ourselves, we have found a few different loops that we really enjoy and that all start at TypeO Loft.

01
Hunnestad – Högestad – Baldringe

This is a 26 km loop that starts with a bit of a climb up the hill from TypeO Loft, past lake Krageholm, through a lush forest and out onto a tree-lined road that leads past Krageholm Manor.

Keep going out of the village of Sövesta towards Högestad over open fields and rolling hills. By Högesta castle, take a left and follow the scenic road towards Baldringe. At the church, make another left turn and follow the winding and very quiet road back towards Sövesta. At the main road, turn left again and then right at the Sövesta church (where you can stop for coffee at Ladan & Loftet). You are now back at the same road that you started and that will take you back to TypeO Loft.

02
Hunnestad – Blentarp – Slimminge

This 40 km loop is one of our favourites. Perfect length for a good workout including a coffee place about midpoint at Blentarp. Starting at TypeO Loft, head northwest along a perfectly smooth back road towards the town of Blentarp. This is where you might want to stop for a coffee at Wahlgrens, which is a popular coffee shop and bakery, to gather some strength and motivation for a climb that puts most of us amateurs to shame.

Head through town and find your way towards Slimminge and that long uphill battle. However, on the other side comes the downhill reward. And people say Skåne is flat as a pancake … Exiting Slimminge, make a left turn towards Rögla. The rest of the way continues to be almost devoid of traffic and takes you along undulating roads, climbs and descents all the way back to the starting point.

03
Hunnestad – Nybrostrand – Ystad – Svarte

A 46 km loop that starts the same way as number one on this list of bike rides in Skåne close to TypeO Loft. It is a fairly easy ride with less change in altitude that takes you over the fields down to the sandy beaches along Nybrostrand and Ystad. In summer, the Danish pastries at Fritidsbaren beg for a stop.

Once you reach Nybrostrand, you can follow a separate bike path away from the traffic along the main road that takes you back to Ystad, along the beach to Svarte, where you make a right towards Marsvinsholm Castle which is a very pretty house built in 1648, when Skåne was part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Pass the castle and continue under the highway and back to where you started.

04
Hunnestad – Ystad – Kåseberga

With about 65 km there and back, this ride is a perfect combo of exercise, sightseeing and perhaps stop for lunch, dinner or just a refreshing beer at the old fishing hamlet in Kåseberga. Kåseberga is also home to an ancient megalithic monument that dates back to the Nordic Iron Age and attracts plenty of visitors in the summer months.

The bike ride itself is easy, fairly flat and, depending on your exact route, often separate from vehicular traffic. Ride along the water, through Ystad, through pine forests and finally over the plains towards your destination at Kåseberga. On the way back, you can make a left at Nybrostrand and find your way back via Högestad.

05
Hunnestad – Hörte – Skanör Falsterbo

140 km there and back, it is not really a loop, but rather a beautiful ride along the ocean. Choose your own point of return and enjoy the sense of freedom of riding your bike along the water. If you choose to go on an all-day excursion, we suggest riding all the way to the seaside resort towns of Skanör and Falsterbo.

Stop for a beer and some food at Hörte Brygga on the way. Most of the ride will take place on separate bike paths away from traffic and the land is almost flat for the duration of the ride. Once in Skanör, have a bite at one of the restaurants in the harbour or just settle for ice cream at Da Aldo, before heading back.

The 2021 Guide to Skåne’s Hotspots

2021 Skåne Hotspots

So Many New Places to See, So Little Time …

We love Skåne and it seems we aren’t alone. The pandemic has certainly not put a damper on things in Skåne, where a line of local creatives have been busy setting up a slew of new restaurants, cafés, shops, coffee roasters, yoga studios and more in recent months. In listing all our favourite 2021 hotspots around the region, we’ve had to abandon our regular selection of only five, and believe that the old saying ”the more the marrier” is better when it comes to summer in Skåne. Happy exploring!

Ps. Are you missing any of your own 2021 favourites in Skåne? Drop us a line at hello@typeo.se and let us know!

01
JH Matbar

The food is seasonal, mostly local and quite ambitious, and clearly delivers in terms of flavour.

02
Common Room
Kåseberga

As of 2021, the coastal village of Kåseberga is so much more than a tourist trap (albeit a good one, and a bit of a must-visit for the Ale Stenar megalithic monument). With the opening of Common Room, which calls itself “a boutique hostel and gathering place for explorers”, a new breed of trendy and outdoorsy types are invading the quaint village.

Visitors are met by a dark and rustic cabin-like reception area that also doubles as a retail space. Here, you can pick up a Pendleton blanket and a Stanley thermos for your next camping trip.

Kåseberga Surf Co
Kåseberga

Another hotspot in Kåseberga, Kåseberga Surf Co is a hang-out spot for those passionate about surfing. Aside from renting a board or SUP, you’ll also be able to buy the sleek boards designed by owner Christian Dittrich.

Susanne, his wife, also contributes with her handmade ceramics and regularly hosts ceramic evening workshops. If you’d rather stay dry and have your feet firmly planted in the Scanian soil, this is also a great spot for specialty coffee and homemade pastries.

04
Gamla Bageriet
Örnahusen

By now, you’ll be familiar with how much we love cinnamon rolls. At this point, it is pretty much a lifestyle. We are on a constant search for that next cinnamon roll fix, hoping that our next one surpasses the previous one.

At Gamla Bageriet bakery in Örnahusen, they have their large assortment of baked goods and bread down to a t. This brand new spot (although ‘gamla’, Swedish for ‘old’ indicated otherwise) is cosy and rustic, and fills the cramped village street with people and cars queueing for a taste of patisserie heaven.

05
Öl & Knäcke
Gladsax

With regular pizzas found in even the smallest of towns across the region, Bella and Jonas Kempe set out to create something a bit more unusual. Öl & Knäcke, which translates to beer and crispbread, serves up low-alcohol beer and crispbread pizza in a revamped barn.

The rye crispbread they use originates from the city of Leksand, home of Swedish crispbread, and toppings include bleak roe, gruyere cheese and caramelized onions.

06
Grönby Gårdscharkuteri
Grönby

A favourite among some of the region’s finest chefs, Grönby Gårdscharkuteri produces a large selection of top-quality charcuteries. All meats are locally sourced and prepared without additives, and are sold at the onsite farm shop.

If you’re hungry, why not pick up one of Grönby’s homemade sourdough pizzas, loaded with meats, cheese and veggies, straight out of the wood-fired oven? Natural wines and their very own “Grönby champagne” is available to wash it all down.

07
Olaols Gelato
Simrishamn

If you have meandered out of your vacation cocoon and find yourself all the way over in Simrishamn, we strongly suggest a visit to Olaols Gelato. A gelateria in the truest form, the artisanal Italian ice cream made on-site by couple Stefan and Ottilia at their quaint farmstead Norrevångsgården.

The flavours vary according to seasonal changes and the availability of local ingredients. If ice cream is not your thing, have a waffle, a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate and just relax in the leafy and quiet cobblestoned courtyard.

08
Bjerreds Station
Bjerred

Bjerreds Station is admittedly a bit of a drive from TypeO Loft. Nevertheless worth the journey to this former resort town, built around health and relaxation for the well to do. The restaurant is housed in the old train station, constructed in 1901 and recently renovated to create a colonial vibe.

The restaurant is open all day and serves lunch and dinner in the dining room (book a table) or on the patio, which is drop-in only and open when weather permits. If you don’t feel like eating a full meal, stop by for coffee or a drink.

09
Ladan & Loftet
Sövestad

Is coffee and yoga a good combo? The folks at Ladan & Loftet certainly seem to think so. In Sövestad, our neighbouring village, two families have teamed up to revamp an old barn – the bottom floor is dedicated to roasting coffee and serving Swedish ‘fika’, while the top floor is transformed into a magnificent yoga studio.

Find your zen and then perk back up with a cup of your favourite brew.

10
Ruths
Malmö

Ruth’s is a beacon in Malmö’s restaurant world. In 2021 the name changed from Bastard and along with a new concept became Ruth’s. Still the same dedicated staff, skilled chefs and delicious foods in a cosmopolitan setting.

Ruth’s is open all day from early in the morning to late at night. Apart from being a really good restaurant, it also functions as a bakery and deli under the supervision of chef and part-owner Andreas Dahlberg.

11
Aster
Malmö

In an old shipyard warehouse, restaurant Aster opens up its doors in the summer of 2021 and becomes Malmö’s new neighbourhood eatery in the city’s developing western parts. The owner trio aims for a convivial and familial vibe with lots of shared meat and fish dishes, often prepared over an open fire, which is chef Sahin Erdal’s passion.

Produce and other ingredients are sourced from the proprietary farm, located in the country, just outside the town of Lund. The rest of the team made up of Mimmi and Linus Montán-Elveroth both have a solid background within the industry as well as a shared passion for delicious cocktails.

12
Brick
Simrishamn

Niina and Jonas Lilja did what we, and many others in the region, have done before – packed our bags and left urban life behind to start afresh in a rural setting. Since landing on the Frideborg farm just outside of Gislöv, they have let their imagination run freely.

Brick Österlen merges all their passions as one joint “meeting spot”, where coffee, art, retail, hospitality and events all play an important part in the mix.

13
Noi
Malmö

A parking lot in a bland industrial area on the outskirts of Malmö is the unlikely place for the city’s hottest pizza spot. Here, foodies flock and queue for a taste of some of the finest Neapolitan pizzas around.

Make sure to get her in time (or check social media for daily status), as these pizzas sell out quickly.

Österlen’s Best Beaches

sandhammaren österlen beach

When Life’s a Beach in Österlen

Southern Sweden’s and Österlen’s beaches are world-famous (in Sweden) and perhaps rightly so. They often stretch over long distances and the fine grain white sand is soft and warm to put your blanket on. Best of all, the drive from TypeO Loft is not long, and as a bonus, the roads are pretty scenic.

Österlen’s beaches are with few exceptions located in rather rural settings, which is one of their major advantages. You will be sure not to have to elbow your way to a sand dune or skip your way over others to get to the water. You will find lovely beaches all along the Skåne coastline but here are some of our personal favourites in no particular order.

01
Sandhammaren

Sandhammaren might be the most famed of the local beaches as it bears the official title of the best beach in Sweden. The gleaming white fine sand dunes follow the coastline for over five kilometres and provide plenty of space for swimmers, kite surfers and sunbathers alike.

On the busiest days on weekends and high season weeks in July and August parking spots might be scarce. A top tip is to head to the western part of Sandhammaren at Tyge Å, via Backåkra.

02
Knäbäckshusen & Rörum

This sandy beach is nothing short of breathtaking. Even before reaching it, the roads leading down to it are quiet, winding and remind us of summers in southern Europe as you pass one or two little vineyards on the way.

This beach is long but narrow. Large oak trees hang out over the water and provide shade if needed. Bring a picnic basket as this secluded national park is devoid of any restaurants or food huts.

03
Löderups strandbad

Löderups strandbad might very well be the epicenter of beach life in Skåne. With plenty of parking, restaurants and ice cream stands, the beach is busier than most in the area. If you want to see and be seen and don’t mind being a little closer to strangers than on other beach locations, this might be the ideal spot.

Renowned restaurant Strandkompaniet will keep your growling stomach quiet both for lunch and dinner if you like to stay late.

04
Mossbystrand

A little closer to us at TypeO Loft, Mossbystrand offers both fine white sand dunes covered in reed to protect against the wind. As per usual, the crowds congregate close to the official parking, where the ice cream stand also happen to be set up.

It is highly recommended to head a little further west, either on foot or by car, if you are looking for some privacy and quiet time. And if you’re feeling peckish, the awesomely quaint little restaurant at Hörte brygga, another couple of kilometres west, is a fantastic destination for some food.

05
Haväng

The beach at Haväng is reached via some of Skåne’s prettiest winding roads through apple orchards and rolling hills. Set up your beach camp for the day on top of the grassy fields to enjoy the view or head down to the narrow strip of sand to swim. The water can best be referred to as “refreshing”, even at the height of summer but the vibe in the area is nothing short of magical.

The area is so vast and the elbow room is plentiful so no need to worry about feeling crowded. But as per usual, try to get as far away from the parking as possible.

Best Winter Reads

In Love with Letters …

This very unusual year, we have fallen back in love with letters. And paragraphs and chapters, too. The extra time we’ve been given to roam around the house has resulted in quite a few extra hours on the couch, leafing through a magazine or deeply sunken into a book.

These, our five favourite magazines and books for the winter of 2020, have all been chosen for their different qualities. While some are insightful, entertaining and captivating, others feature striking photography or carefully crafted typography and graphic design. All of them have one common denominator – they are all worthy of a prominent spot on the coffee table or bedside table.

01
Akt Magazine
Issue 3

With the risk of tooting our own horns, we highly recommend getting the latest issue of Akt, an independent magazine in search for greatness in a small corner, abstraction in the mass, with a keen eye for timeless aesthetics and a nod to Belgium’s creative landscape.

For Akt III, TypeO’s co-founder Micha van Dinther has contributed with two articles – an essay on the feeling of melancholy, as well as a portrait of Cédric Etienne of Studio Corkinho and self-proclaimed ‘curator of stillness’.

The Kinfolk Garden

With the release of The Kinfolk Table and The Kinfolk Home, lifestyle brand Kinfolk made quite a splash in the design world with its unique vision of community, gastronomy and design. Will their take on horticultural life have the same impact?

The Kinfolk Garden isn’t your average garden book. It is less about what to plant when, but more about the people behind some of the world’s most intriguing gardens and plant-filled homes. It also educates the reader about the secrets to a good garden and what it can do for our self-care and creativity.

The Monocle Book of Gentle Living

Monocle‘s books on home decor, entrepreneurship and eating and drinking have become staples here at TypeO. In their latest book, the editorial team takes on topics of slowing down, enjoying more and being happy. Not an easy feat, no doubt.

The book’s ten chapters cover how to live a gentler life, how to have a good home, what pastimes to make time for, how to eat well, how to dress with care, how to stay more active, how to occasionally get lost, the importance of seeing new places and how to find balance. This book is a sound investment for a better life.

Still: The Slow Home

“When were you last still? Without movement and motion. And free from thoughts tumbling and rumbling ahead. But still in the silent depths of quiet calm. Holding a space for now.”

With these words, interior stylist, author and designer Natalie Walton gets right down to business in her latest book, Still: The Slow Home. It is insightful, aspirational and down-to-earth, qualities that aren’t often found on the pages of the same book. Accompanied by gorgeous photographs by Chris Warnes, we get an intimate tour of the homes and lives of 20 individuals and families around the world. This book has it all.

Vincent Van Duysen: Works 2009–2018

Before the pandemic struck, we had the pleasure of visiting the wonderful city of Antwerp. While there, we stayed at August, Belgium master-designer Vincent Van Duysen‘s latest hospitality project (read the full story here), and toured some of his other public projects: Graanmarkt 13 and the Pulcinella youth hostel.

Now that all travel happens in the mind, this book, an anthology of Van Duysen’s works between the years of 2009 and 2018 (which unfortunately excludes August, as it opened in 2019) offers a journey into the aesthetic world of his. Be warned that this book will induce severe design wanderlust.
