Danish brand Alterlyset, which roughly translates into the altar candle, was founded in 1950 by Jens Andreas Dahl Hansen. Under its former name Hygge Lys, the candle factory soon became a preferred supplier to churches throughout the country.
With a penchant for industrial design, he created a sculptural and timeless candle that did not require a candlestick or candelabra. Instead, the candle was meant to be placed directly on a table or the floor. The innovative shape of the candle has remained the same and has become an iconic Danish design classic.
Alterlyset’s candles are made in Denmark by the fourth generation of the Dahl Hansen family. Each piece is cast from 100% RSPO-certified vegetable stearin and is finished by hand.
