Just Between Us

We adore South Africa and everything it has to offer. One of our favourite destinations in the country is undoubtedly Cape Town, where we love to explore the restaurant and bar scene, Table Mountain and the many hiking options to the top, as well as the nearby Cape Winelands.

After a couple of days in town, and all the eating out it entails, we always start longing for a meal that gives us a break from the countless burgers featured on virtually every casual restaurant menu in town. For some reason, a well-cooked casual meal made from quality produce seems to be hard to come by in the Mother city.

Thank god for the Friedberg twins. The two sisters Jesse and Jamie have converting a listed Victorian building into a gastronomic haven, featuring rustic exposed brick walls, custom-made wooden furniture, string floral arrangements in to-die-for brass vases and contemporary geometrical lighting fixtures.

Equally high in quality is the menu, with stunning dishes being plated in gorgeous ceramics in the open kitchen. Although simple, the pappardelle with rich, slow-cooked oxtail ragu and ’cavolo nero’ Italian kale and black rice topped with a poached egg displays a sophistication we haven’t quite experienced anywhere else in Cape Town, and we can see why the dining room is crammed with posh ladies who lunch, well-dressed creatives and a group of models, probably from one of the nearby modelling agencies.
